My father was a British professional soldier who fought in South East Asia, in Burma against Japan and in Britain's great victory over communist insurgency in Malaya. In Malaya he came across The Art of War by Sun Tzu, the greatest treatise on warfare ever written; it changed his life. He steeped himself in Sun Tzu's philosophy. And from that time on, in every move he made, careerwise or otherwise, wherever an objective and conflict were involved, he applied Sun Tzu's 13 Rules of Engagement. And won.

My father believed That Sun Tzu's Rules are truths that show the path to victory on all of life's battlefronts, school, work, career promotion and business decisions. He believed that The Art Of War should be required reading not just for military personel, but in schools and universites He handed me a copy on my sixteenth birthday with instructions to study it and apply it. I did as he told me and have never once regretted it

Now, my father was also a great lover with many beautiful women as constant companions. And as he was no film star I often wondered how he pulled such lovely ladies

Only after his death, on reading his copious diaries, did I discover his secret

His diaries record no failures, although he must have lost the odd battle, but his victories spoke for themselves as I had seen with my own eyes
